Pathologist testifies he’s unsure whether police choke hold contributed to Elijah McClain’s death Elijah McClain is pictured in this undated photograph. (Photo provided by family of Elijah McClain)The pathologist who performed Elijah McClain’s autopsy testified Tuesday that he was unsure if a police neck hold contributed to the Black man’s 2019 death as attorneys for two Denver-area officers on trial for homicide sought to cast doubt about the prosecution’s case.Pathologist Stephen Cina initially ruled in 2019 that McClain’s cause of death was undetermined in a case that along with the killings of George Floyd and others galvanized critics of excessive police force against Black people. But in a revised autopsy report from 2021, Cina said the cause was an overdose of a sedative, ketamine, that was injected by paramedics after the 23-year-old massage therapist was stopped and put in a neck hold while walking home in the Denver suburb of Aurora. He also noted that ketamine was given after McClain had been forcibly restrained by police.Cina said Tuesday that he didn’t have enough ev...

This is why Vanna White isn't on 'Wheel of Fortune' this week A major piece to the puzzle was missing on "Wheel of Fortune" this week. For the third time ever, in more than 40 years, Vanna White is out sick. Don't worry, she's OK. White missed a day of filming back in August as she was recovering from COVID-19. That means she missed five episodes. Pat Sajak, left, and Vanna White, from "Wheel of Fortune," attend a ceremony honoring Harry Friedman with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Nov. 1, 2019, in Los Angeles. Sajak is taking one last spin on “Wheel of Fortune," announcing Monday, June 12, 2023, that its upcoming season will be his last as host. (Photo by Richard Shotwell/Invision/AP, File)She got sick while filming “Teacher’s Week."The episodes could not be rescheduled due to the school year starting, so Bridgette Donald-Blue, the 2023 California Teacher of the Year, stepped in as White’s replacement while she recovered.Pat Sajak touched on White's absence during Monday's episode. "You'll notice Vanna is not here, and I have to say t...

Man on Man at Zebulon

Man on Man at Zebulon Man on Man at Zebulon: Man On Man is erstwhile Faith No More man Roddy Bottum and his significant other Joey Holman. “It was double-sided,” Bottom told us of their working relationship back in June. “Fortunate in one way, that we’re boyfriends and we love each other, but also this thing opened up where, ‘oh we can create together.’ That is very rare.”“We had no idea we were making a band when we first started making the record,” Holman said. “We were just passing the time, and we were just writing music together. It was Roddy’s idea. We were driving from New York to L.A. and we had musical instruments. We knew we had to be stuck inside for a while, and we were just like, ‘Yeah, let’s make music.’ We didn’t have any concept of the future at all. It was just, ‘Let’s pass the time and let’s just survive and have some sort of a creative outlet.’ So we were very surprised and felt very lucky to be able to be here three years later at this point, and still doing it.”Phranc and dimber also...

First Look: San Jose’s Rollati restaurant, City Hall’s sleek new neighbor The gleaming Miro luxury apartment towers sprung up in downtown San Jose during the pandemic, and with them came the promise of an upscale ground-floor restaurant for the public and the residents above.Vine Hospitality, the parent company of Left Bank, the Bay Area’s best known group of French brasseries, snagged the opportunity, announcing in early 2022 that it would build its first Italian restaurant in the nearly 7,000-square-foot space.More than 18 months later, Rollati Ristorante is open. Dinner and cocktails are served daily from 5 p.m., with weekday lunch and happy hour starting this week. How does Rollati fit into this new urban landscape? We made a reservation to check it out. California craft beer: Not your father’s fall seasonals

California craft beer: Not your father’s fall seasonals Now that fall is here, it’s time to put away those light lagers and golden ales of summer. Cooler weather calls for heartier beer. While many people reach for Märzens (or Oktoberfest beers), brown ales, red ales, amber ales, porters or stouts, there are many others that will satisfy your thirst at least as well or perhaps even better than those typical fall beers.A quick word on pumpkin beers: If you love the myriad pumpkin drinks that inevitably show up each fall, you’ll be happy to know that you’ll have no trouble getting your fill this October. And if that’s your passion, I won’t try to stop you. But here are a few more interesting suggestions.Maple beersBrewing with maple syrup is nothing new, but it’s not as common an addition as many other ingredients. It adds a unique sweetness and texture to the beer that’s perfect for fall, whether or not you’re having pancakes too.Check out Oakland’s Original Pattern Brewing Co., which makes Banshee, a maple brown ale tha...

San Jose leaders will let “Trash Bag Church” good deed go unpunished San Jose City Councilmember Omar Torres tells me the city won’t be moving forward with any action against Jim Salata, the CEO of Garden City Construction who led a crew to remove the tattered tarp from downtown’s historic but dilapidated First Church of Christ, Scientist.Salata must have ruffled some feathers at City Hall in late August when crews removed the shredded black plastic that earned the building the nickname “Trash Bag Church.” Torres told this news organization city staff informed him that Salata didn’t have permission to enter the property to do the work — though he had a code to open the gate because of previous work he’d done on the site — and the city was considering fining him for trespassing. The idea of punishing someone for doing a job demanded by both Mayor Matt Mahan and Torres just a few days previously came as a surprise — and was seen by some as a slap in the face to Salata for his act of “vigilante ...
