As the final Pac-12 football season nears a conclusion, the conference is approaching resolution on another contested issue: control of hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue and assets. The lawsuit filed by Washington State and Oregon State in early September is scheduled for a critical hearing on Tuesday in Whitman County (Wash.) Superior Court, where Judge Gary Libey could determine the makeup of the governing board and, thus, control of the finances.Or maybe he won’t rule on Tuesday.Or maybe the process will end before the hearing even begins. The outlook is uncertain, but the stakes are clear — and substantial. The Cougars and Beavers believe the 10 outbound schools relinquished their board positions when they agreed to join other conferences starting next summer. The 10 outbound schools believe they have not violated the Pac-12’s bylaws and should retain their board seats. The Cougars and Beavers believe that if allowed to remain on the board, the departing sc...

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Left tackle Trent Williams will join wide receiver Deebo Samuel in returning from two-game abscesses, giving the 49ers (5-3) an offensive boost for today’s game against the red-hot Jaguars (6-2).Williams looked surprisingly spry as he walked into EverBankStadium, after laboring through Thursday’s practice, which was his first action since a right-ankle sprain in the 49ers’ loss at Cleveland four weeks ago.Williams was listed as questionable, as was linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (ankle), the latter of whom is inactive.Samuel was cleared off the injury list after practicing throughout the past week. He left that Oct. 15 loss at Cleveland in the first quarter, when he sustained a left-shoulder injury that was diagnosed a week later as a hairline fracture.“You get Deebo back on the field, it helps. That changes everything. That changes the attitude when they take the football field with him,” Michael Irvin said on NFL Netw...

FREMONT — Police and animal services officers have recovered dozens of cats from the home of a retired humane services officer who was allegedly keeping the animals in disgusting conditions at the residence, authorities said. The officers identified at least 73 cats at the Fremont residence, and noted that some animals were dead and decomposing inside cages. Some were found with ringworm, flea infestations, respiratory illness, and other medical maladies, and others were kept in cages with hamster water bottles or no access to water at all, authorities said.Police and animal control became aware of the situation, ironically, after the homeowner reached out to authorities for help taking care of the animals while she was hospitalized for a long-term stay. Subsequent inspections of her home revealed that cats were being kept in cages, sometimes stacked three or four high, others with multiple cats inside a single kennel, authorities said.Officers brought in veterinary technicians...

Otherwise, there can be no climate justice without international solidarity,” Thunberg said. After the Palestinian and Afghan women spoke and Thunberg resumed her speech, a man came onto the stage and told her: “I have come here for a climate demonstration, not a political view,” before he was ushered off the stage. The man’s identity was not immediately clear. Protesters will demonstrate against world leaders, Israel-Hamas war as APEC comes to San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Activists protesting corporate profits, environmental abuses, poor working conditions and the Israel-Hamas war are among those planning to march in downtown San Francisco on Sunday, united in their opposition to a global trade summit that will draw President Joe Biden and leaders from nearly two dozen countries. Protests are expected throughout this week’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders’ conference, which could draw more than 20,000 attendees, including hundreds of international journalists. The No to APEC coalition, made up of more than 100 grassroots groups, says trade deals struck at summits such as APEC exploit workers and their families. It’s unlikely world leaders will even glimpse the protests given the strict security zones accessible only to attendees at the Moscone Center conference hall and other summit sites. But Suzanne Ali, an organizer for the Palestinian Youth Movement, says the U.S. government needs to be held to account f...

KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israeli ground forces on Sunday battled Hamas militants near Gaza’s largest hospital, where health officials said thousands of staff, patients and displaced people remain trapped with no electricity, dwindling supplies and some gunfire coming inside.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected growing international calls for a cease-fire unless it includes the release of all the nearly 240 hostages captured by Hamas in the Oct. 7 rampage that triggered the war, saying Israel was bringing its “full force” with the aim of ending Hamas’ 16-year rule in Gaza.Residents reported heavy airstrikes and shelling, including around Shifa Hospital. Israel, without providing evidence, has accused Hamas of concealing a command post inside and under the hospital compound, allegations denied by Hamas and hospital staff.“We spent the night in panic waiting for their arrival,” said Ahmed al-Boursh, a resident taking shelter in the hospital. “They are outside, not...
