MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Mo. - Authorities say a suspect used some bizarre techniques to steal large amounts of gas from one rural Missouri gas station on several occasions. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office reports the suspect was arrested during the early-morning hours of Oct. 4. The suspect's name, age, or gender have not been disclosed, but authorities say the recent arrest is part of a months-long investigation. Investigators say the suspect targeted a BP gas station at the junction of Highway 19 and Highway 94 near McKittrick, Missouri. Sex offender banned from rec centers after FOX 2 tip According to the sheriff's office, the suspect cut off the gas cap locks to access large underground tanks. After that, the suspect pumped gasoline directly from the storage tanks, sometimes storing it in a 50-gallon plastic drum. For nearly half a year, deputies reviewed many of these schemes on security cameras. While investigating, deputies collected information on a suspect vehicle and w...

Letters: Prop. HH’s property tax break is needed relief

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:41:01 GMT

Proposition HH will provide reliefRe: “Prop HH is a money grab,” Oct. 15 letters to the editorRegarding the letters in last Sunday’s Open Forum, I plan to vote for Proposition HH and hope the majority do the same. I have no idea what the situation might be with the writers of the anti-HH letters, but for me and a lot of other homeowners, the assessed value of my home is skyrocketing next year (over 60%). That means that, all else being equal, my property taxes will also skyrocket to the point where they may become unaffordable. My appeal for a reassessment went nowhere, as it did for most other people in Arapahoe County. My only hope is for some help with Proposition HH.With all due respect to the lovers of TABOR, I’ve always believed that it should never have been passed, as it short circuits the way our democratic republic is supposed to work. We elect people to represent us with the hope that they will make the best decisions for us. TABOR often hamstrings their effor...

The many lives of tomato pie

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:41:01 GMT

By Mari Uyehara, The New York TimesOn the website for Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana in New Haven, Connecticut, ordering the “Original Tomato Pie” is accompanied by a warning: “By selecting this, you are acknowledging that this pie has no Mozzarella on it.”In New Haven apizza nomenclature, the tomato pie, also known as a plain pie, is a thin-crust pizza blistered in a coal-fired oven and then covered with a thin layer of sauce and a sprinkling of grated Pecorino Romano.New Haven might be best known for its white clam pizzas, but the heartbeat of the city just might be the humble but mighty tomato pie.Jennifer Kelly, one of Frank Pepe’s granddaughters, estimates that 75% to 80% of the tables she served before retiring ordered it. “That’s my favorite pie,” she said. “It is the pie that my grandfather started. It was a pie that I was raised on. It’s simple. And it’s just delicious.”While America has gone wild with pizza toppings, the tomato pie’s allure is in its focus. Even its name i...

Californians set to 'drop, cover and hold on' in annual ShakeOut quake drill Thursday

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:41:01 GMT

People will duck under desks and tables in California and around the world on Thursday for an annual drill practicing ways to stay safe during earthquakes.Up and down the West Coast, the ShakeOut drill was scheduled to begin at 10:19 a.m. PDT with a cellphone-rattling test alert from the region's ShakeAlert earthquake warning system. New research gives insight into why the ‘Big One’ hasn’t hit Los Angeles yet For many it would be the second alert of the day, following an errant predawn message that hit some phones with a voice message announcing the test. The U.S. Geological Survey said it was likely due to a mix-up in time zones set in the test alert system. The real thing happened a day earlier, however, when a magnitude 4.2 quake struck southwest of California's capital in the agricultural Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta region. The tremor triggered a warning from the ShakeAlert system, which detects the start of a quake and sends warnings to areas expected to experience shak...

Jim Jordan to endorse empowering McHenry as temporary Speaker

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:41:01 GMT

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) will back a resolution to empower Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) as he continues to work to shore up support for his Speaker bid, according to a source familiar. The move comes after Jordan failed on two ballots to get the 217 votes he needed to win the gavel and opponents were promising greater resistance. But it’s unclear whether a vote to empower McHenry will pass muster on the House floor. While the push to expand McHenry’s power has been growing this week, several conservative Republicans on Thursday came out strongly against doing so. Whether Jordan’s endorsement of the idea moves them — and whether Democrats may be willing to make up for any GOP defections — remains the key question. The resolution would broadly grant McHenry the same powers as an elected Speaker, but it would only leave him in the role until January, and he would not be in the line of presidential succession.  Jordan is not dropping out of the race and will remain the...
