OAKLAND — Like he’s done so many times before, Bob Melvin arrived at the Coliseum early on Friday morning to run up and down the stairs of the 57-year-old ballpark. Then he looked into the upper deck, noticed the retired numbers and had a sad realization: all the Oakland teams — the Raiders, the Warriors and the A’s — could soon be gone.“That’s one of the first things I thought about today,” the former A’s manager said. Now leading the Padres, who have a $250-million payroll but are on the verge of being eliminated from the playoffs, Melvin returned to the Coliseum on Friday for the first time since he left the A’s in 2021.“I got here plenty early today,” he said. “I went out here early, saw Clay Wood, the groundskeeper, and Reba, who is his dog, who is a very good friend of mine. She remembered me, came running, that was a very good feeling right away.”Perhaps he was caught up in the nostalgia of being home, but Melvin seemed almost reluctant to ac...Vigil to be held for boy who died, siblings injured one year after tragic accident

Lauren Boebert vaping during a “Beetlejuice” musical play — the one thing she denied doing while acknowledging earlier this week that she had been kicked out for being disruptive.Boebert and her guest were escorted out of the play Sunday after audience members accused two guests of vaping, singing, using phones and causing a disturbance, according to theater representatives and video from the publicly owned Buell Theater. When the lights were still on and as people were taking their seats around Boebert, she can be seen in the surveillance video talking with her companion. Boebert then reaches beneath her seat and puts an object up to her mouth for a moment before blowing out a cloud of vapor or smoke, the footage first reported by KUSA-TV shows. The footage also shows flashes from Boebert’s phone as she holds it up and ...Mitt Romney, like his father, fears the GOP has lost its way

By Mead Gruver and Jonathan J. Cooper | Associated PressMitt Romney’s announcement this week that he will not seek another term in the U.S. Senate came with a distant echo of his father’s departure from politics five decades ago.Mitt and his father, George Romney, at one time were top Republican contenders for the presidency, but fell short of the White House. Both ended their careers in elected office with a sense their party had lost its bearings. And both called for a more humane party, one that prioritizes civility and principle over resentments and score-settling.In eras 50 years apart, George and Mitt Romney found themselves isolated in a GOP increasingly uninterested in their brand of genteel, country-club conservatism. In following a path forged by his father, sometimes with eerie similarities, Mitt Romney became the latest in a line of prominent establishment Republicans who pushed back against Donald Trump’s vision for the party, only to become isolated. ...Berríos goes 7 innings, Guerrero hits 3-run HR as Blue Jays halt slump, beat Red Sox 3-0

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Bob Melvin showed up at the Oakland Coliseum before 11 a.m. Friday ahead of a night game and began his old routine of running the Coliseum bleachers — taking 21 minutes to complete the lower bowl stairs just as he has done for years.Yet this time, the veteran manager now leading the San Diego Padres found himself reflecting on all of the retired numbers in the upper deck and how much those players have meant to an Athletics franchise that’s suddenly in a state of flux. The team is planning to move to Las Vegas, which would leave Oakland without a professional team. “I think the fans and everybody else should enjoy it while it’s here and hopefully it’s here a little bit longer than everybody thinks,” Melvin said, sitting in the visiting dugout during his first time back at the Coliseum in nearly two years. The Golden State Warriors moved across the bay to San Francisco in 2019, then the Oakland Raiders relocated to Las Vegas the next year.Melvi...Latest news
