JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Less than 24 hours before the state of a trial to decide if slot machines that offer cash prizes are illegal, the judge dismissed the case. We've all seen them inside convenience stores and truck stops: video lottery terminals. Torch Electronics wanted the courts to stop the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) from seizing these machines. Then, the Missouri Gaming Association intervened, saying these games are already illegal. Instead, a Cole County judge tossed the lawsuit."What the judge, I think, ultimately said was if I'm going to throw out Torch, I'm going to throw out the Gaming Association and put the whole case on ice," Marc Ellinger, attorney for the Missouri Gaming Association, said Tuesday.A lawsuit filed by Torch Electronics back in 2021 asking a judge to protect the company, which is a vendor of slot machines, from future police investigations can no longer move forward."He doesn't think the courts are the right place to resolve this," Chuck Hatfie...National Night Out events across St. Louis

The city is experiencing a 41 percent surge in auto burglaries compared to crime statistics last year.More than 11,000 vehicles have been burglarized in Oakland in 2023. "That's a significant increase. I'm from Oakland. Everywhere you go in Oakland, this is what people are talking about," Interim Assistant Chief Tony Jones told reporters gathered at the police station. They are armed and dangerous," Jones cautioned. "It's just not worth it." Negotiations continue Tuesday night between health care provider Kaiser Permanente and a coalition of unions representing more than 75,000 of its workers. About 400 of these employees are based in the D.C. area. The coalition’s contract expired when the clock struck midnight Sunday. In D.C. and Virginia, according to Kaiser, the contract that expired does not cover all its health care professionals — specifically, optometrists and pharmacists will be the ones affected and participating in the work stoppage. If the negotiating parties can’t reach an agreement by 6 a.m. Wednesday, these workers will walk off the job and strike for 24 hours.Nationwide, Kaiser unions are calling for better wages, retirement benefits and protections from jobs being subcontracted and outsourced.“Kaiser continues to bargain in bad faith over these issues and, so far, there is no light at the end of the tunnel,” the coalition said in a statement Saturday, hours before the contract expi...DC police don’t know what’s driving high rate of juvenile carjackings
