In the latest edition of the Nuggets Ink Podcast, beat writer Bennett Durando and sports editor Matt Schubert reconvene after two weeks with a bunch of news to discuss. Among the topics discussed:For the first time in quite some time, Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic actually got a friendly whistle in a Christmas Day win over the Golden State Warriors — prompting a testy rant from Warriors coach Steve Kerr. Was the future Hall of Fame coach right about players baiting officials? And even if he is, is there anything the NBA can do about it?Later that night, Nuggets forward Aaron Gordon suffered injuries from a dog bite while celebrating with a little eggnog. Vance Joseph knows the score in the NFL. It’s a tough business.Early in the season, the Broncos’ defensive business was bad.Since then, though, the Denver defensive coordinator has helped engineer a turnaround in a season he described Thursday as rewarding and also encouraging regarding what the future holds.“It took us a while for us to catch our balance, but I was proud of the guys for allowing us to coach them,” he said in likely his final chat with reporters before the offseason. “In this league, it’s pro football, they can say no to your coaching. They can say, ‘I don’t agree with that.’ But this group never did that to us. It was a group that was always open-minded and hard-working and always positive.”All of those characteristics might have gone for naught had Denver folded after its horrid start and the 70-20 Week 3 loss to Miami. Instead, though, the defense worked its way out of the deep hole. The numbers won’t look great when the dust settles, but over the past 10 weeks th...West Hollywood ‘Hell House’ demolished

Braving Tuesday evening’s rain, a few dozen Gilroy residents gathered outside of Station 55 Mexican Restaurant downtown to rally against city orders to remove a parklet that has become the center of an ongoing dispute. When the Gilroy City Council ordered the removal by the end of December, the restaurant refused to comply. Many Gilroy residents have voiced their support for the restaurant, claiming that the decision to remove the parklet was unfair and discriminatory since another parklet in the area has been allowed to remain standing. At the rally, dozens of supporters chanted in English and Spanish, holding poster board signs demanding Gilroy “Stop Discriminating”; other signs read “No to Racism,” “Both Parklets or No Parklets,” and “Support Small Businesses.” Several community members gave speeches, including councilmembers Rebeca Armendariz and Fred Tovar, who voted against letting Station 55 lose their permit for the parklet.Teodomira Castill...Discovery of body in Hercules triggers death investigation

SANTA CLARA — Inside the 49ers’ joyous locker room Sunday, some players wondered aloud if they’d get still paid for the wild-card round, which they’ll bypass as the No. 1 seed. The answer: Yes, $45,500 apiece. When one player posed that question to sixth-year veteran Sam Darnold, however, a teammate interrupted and teased how Darnold wouldn’t know the answer, because he’s never gone to the playoffs.Well, Darnold is going now, in his first year with the 49ers as their backup. Because the 49ers are locked into the NFC playoffs’ top spot, they will stash Brock Purdy for the playoffs and instead start Darnold in Sunday’s regular-season finale. He’ll oppose a playoff-bound Los Angeles Rams team that will start Carson Wentz over Matthew Stafford.“I’m just excited to keep playing more football, man,” Darnold said. “Week 18 isn’t the last week of football we’re going to be playing here.
